Act For Wolf Tortured, Killed in WY
[Original action alert from the Sierra Club]
On February 29th, a hunter on a snowmobile chased down and ran over a wolf in Wyoming, injuring and disabling it. He then taped its mouth shut, took it into a bar in Daniel, Wyoming, and tortured it before taking it behind the bar and killing it.
Under Wyoming’s laws, he was fined only $250.00 for possessing a wild animal. Wolf hunting in Wyoming is open year-round, no quota and no license required. Eighty-five percent of Wyoming is a predator zone where wolves can be killed anytime, in any manner.
Chasing and running down wolves with snowmobiles and ATVs is legal in Wyoming, along with hound pursuit and trapping. Hunters videotape themselves running over wolves and coyotes until they die.
The Wyoming Game and Fish Department covered up the incident for a month. They did not release the name of the perpetrator.
The truth came out late last week in a report from KHOL and the Cowboy State Daily on April 2, 2024.
The Sheriff’s office was not notified or called in to help with the investigation. It’s beyond comprehension that states, including Wyoming, allow this animal torture without serious penalty. including jail, steep fines, and a ban on hunting, trapping, and fishing for years. These states need legislation making acts of cruelty to all animals a criminal felony with steep fines, jail time, and confiscation of firearms and traps for many years to hold perpetrators accountable.
WGFD has not released the game warden’s report of the incident and refuses to answer questions or speak to reporters.
unleashing the worst elements of humans to torture animals.
WGFD is complicit in this torture, shows complete disregard for the welfare of publicly owned wildlife, and dismisses the public’s right to know.
You may not be able to change Wyoming’s laws directly if you don’t live there. However, you can voice your outrage and make it known you’ll show your disdain for their cruel practices with your pocketbook and avoid Wyoming. Media reports indicate the state is already worried about national pushback. And they should be. Cruelty towards animals should never be tolerated, along with laws that allow it.
