Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, has announced her decision to step down from Democratic leadership, passing the baton to the next generation of lawmakers.

First elected to the House in 1987 and to the Speakership in 2007, Pelosi is the Democratic Party’s long-serving House leader and the first woman to hold the post.

During her time in leadership, she used her legislative skills and fundraising prowess to help pass landmark achievements like the Affordable Care Act, the Dream and Promise Act and the Farm Workforce Modernization Act, the largest climate bill in U.S. history, the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell, the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, and much, much more.
