Alumni Demand A New Deal for CUNY

CUNY alumni help run New York City. We are a key part of NYC, which is why we want to make CUNY better for the next generations.

As alumni and former students who attended the City University of New York, we offer our full support for the New Deal for CUNY (S4461/A05843). This is a historic moment to reject austerity, and New York can lead the way.

This is what A New Deal for CUNY looks like:

  1. Free CUNY for in-state undergraduates;

  2. More mental health counselors and academic advisors hired at CUNY;

  3. Smaller class sizes by increasing the ratio of full-time faculty to students and professionalized adjunct compensation.

  4. Investment in a capital renewal plan to address urgent issues of safety, accessibility, energy, capacity and maintenance of CUNY buildings.

Funding CUNY is a matter of racial justice – 80% of the student body is people of color. The New York State budget should not be balanced on the backs of Black and brown New Yorkers. Everyone should pay their fair share.

CUNY is the economic engine of our city and investment in it delivers benefits for everyone, far beyond current and future students and workers.

New Yorkers built three CUNY colleges in the wake of the Great Depression: Brooklyn College, Lehman College and Queens College. Let’s draw on that history of investment in response to the crisis to crisis and make CUNY the university we know it can be. Sign up for A New Deal for CUNY NOW!
