I support borrower protections and urge the AZ Attorney General to join the lawsuit to uphold them
Attorneys general of 18 states and the District of Columbia filed suit against U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos for rescinding federal protections designed to hold abusive for-profit colleges accountable for cheating students and taxpayers out of billions of dollars in federal loans.
The protections, known as “borrower defense to repayment,” were set to go into effect July 1st and sought to make it easier for defrauded student loan borrowers to seek debt forgiveness if schools used deceptive or illegal means to encourage students to take out loans to attend.
The lawsuit, Commonwealth of Massachusetts v. United States Department of Education and Betsy DeVos, aims to keep the U.S. Department of Education accountable to the very students it is supposed to serve. Without the Borrower Defense Rule, defrauded students are unable to seek a remedy in court.
Arizona's Attorney General has not joined the lawsuit to protect students. Add your name as a citizen co-signer to support the decision by the 19 attorneys general to stand up for students.
It is simply wrong that the Department of Education would want to do away with regulations that protect students.
