Basic Income Conversation with Michael Tubbs

The Basic Income Conversation is excited to welcome Michael Tubbs, former Mayor of Stockton, to join us to discuss the Stockton Demonstration, Mayors for a Guaranteed Income and the growing movement for basic income in the United States.

Monday 12th April - 7-8pm (UK time), 11am-12 (PST)

Michael Tubbs is the former Mayor of Stockton, the home of the Stockton Economic Empowerment Demonstration (SEED) which ran a pilot of Basic Income between 2019-2021. The results yet again show basic income works and are sending reverberations around the United States and the world. Michael is also Founder of Mayors for a Guaranteed Income, a network of Mayors across the United States committed to further pilots and advocacy of basic income. As a result Michael is fast becoming one of the faces of the movement for basic income around the world and we’re delighted to have him join us (virtually) in the UK.

Michael will be in conversation with Michael Pugh, Director and Co-Founder of the Basic Income Conversation. Michael visited Stockton in 2019 as part of his Churchill Fellowship that saw him visit pilots across North America. We’ll also have contributions from Tchiyiwe Chihana of the UBI Lab Network and Jon Alexander of Lib Dems for a Basic Income as we discuss the links between the movements for basic income on both sides of the Atlantic.

We’ll be discussing:

  • The results of the Stockton demonstration

  • The growing number of basic income pilots across the US

  • Mayors for a Guaranteed Income and the politics surrounding basic income

  • The importance of narratives and framing when communicating basic income

  • And the implications of what's happening in the US for us in the UK

Sign up to attend! You’ll receive the zoom details by email!
