Here are some talking points to help with your call.

  • Alabama Senator Jeff Beauregard Sessions opposes voting rights, civil rights, women’s rights, immigration reform and criminal justice reform.
  • How can someone who prosecuted civil rights activists for conducting voter registration drives be trusted to protect our democracy? How can someone who called the Voting Rights Act an “intrusion” be trusted to serve as the chief advocate for our Constitutional rights?
  • When it comes to appointing critical cabinet positions, we need leaders who reflect our country’s core democratic values. The U.S. Attorney General has the sacred responsibility of advocating for all Americans, particularly for those among us who most need a champion.
  • The Attorney General serves as the legal and moral compass for the president and our nation. We need a leader in this important position who is committed to upholding and protecting a democracy that is of, by, and for the people.
  • Throughout his career, Senator Sessions has demonstrated a complete disregard for basic civil and human rights and the very laws he would be responsible for protecting and promoting as Attorney General. Sessions is truly unfit in every way and would quickly lead our country at full speed in the wrong direction.
  • During his 20 years in the Senate, Sessions has repeatedly voted against legislation that would protect our constitutional values of liberty and equality – including the expansion of the Hate Crimes Prevention Act and the Violence Against Women Act.
  • How can we entrust someone who voted against a hate crimes bill with thelife of the next Matthew Shepherd or James Byrd, Jr.? How can we possiblybelieve that someone who fought against a bill to prevent violence against women would step in to save the life of an abused spouse?
  • For decades, Sessions has been an outspoken critic of the Voting Rights Act, calling it “a piece of intrusive legislation.” In the 1980s, he waged an infamous prosecution against civil rights activists on phony voter fraud charges, which a jury readily dismissed. Sessions’ complete disrespect for the right to vote threatens the ability of people to have their voices heard on all issues that affect their lives.
  • At the Democracy Initiative, we represent 30 million people through our network of almost 60 civil rights, environmental, labor and civic organizations. Our coalition includes the NAACP, AFL-CIO, Sierra Club and dozens of other groups that strongly urge the Senate to fully vet Sessions’ concerning record and reject his nomination.
  • We know people are feeling disconnected and disenfranchised – including young people, people of color and white working class citizens. In this election, there was a strong groundswell of opposition against the status quo and polls showed a desire to shake up Washington politics. It’s ironic that the president-elect would choose a longtime D.C. insider who represents the past and has proven through his actions and words that he is against an inclusive democracy.
