Call Your City Councilmember to Fund Democracy Dollars!

We deserve a local government that listens to us and takes action to address the issues that affect us every day such as public safety, housing, and schools. That’s why we will continue to fight for a City Council that works for all of us - elected officials who reflect the values and needs of our communities. Delaying Democracy Dollars is not fair for voters, who showed their overwhelming support for the program during the last year’s election by voting YES on Measure W (Fair Elections Oakland) to create a more transparent and accountable government.

We need your help to urge your City Councilmember to push for funding that will enable Democracy Dollars to be piloted soon. We can't wait another election cycle for this measure to take effect. With this funding, we can ensure that Oakland voters have a greater say in local elections and that our democracy works for all of us.

“Hello, my name is [Your Name], and I'm calling as a concerned Oakland resident from District [District #]. I'm calling to urge the Councilmember to fund the Democracy Dollars program in the upcoming budget.

Oakland passed Measure W last year with more than 74% of the vote, establishing the nation's second-ever Democracy Dollars program. Democracy Dollars will help to ensure that every Oakland resident has more power over decisions that impact our communities, regardless of the neighborhood they live in, the color of their skin, or how much money they make.

Funding the Democracy Dollars program is critical to achieving a transparent and representative local government that is responsive to the needs and concerns of all Oaklanders. The budget is a moral document and giving people power over what is prioritized is the right thing to do - especially when it makes up less than .5% of the budget fund.

Can you please pass this message along to [City Councilmember’s Name] and urge them to fund the program in the upcoming budget?

[Wait for Response]

Thank you and we hope the mayor will join Oakland residents in supporting a fairer, more accountable Oakland through the democracy dollars program.”

If you’re unable to reach your city councilmember, please ask to leave a message.
