Christian Response to Jan. 6 Attack on our Nation and American Values
We, faith leaders from diverse traditions across America, condemn the January 6th insurrection and attack on our country and on our people, instigated by President Trump, and carried out by his followers. We reject the values of White supremacy and Christian nationalism that were on display inside our nation's Capitol. We lament the flying of the Confederate flag, a symbol of racism and hatred. We condemn the blasphemy and heresy of these so-called Christians who would so abuse the Lord’s name and the Gospel of Jesus. And, we call upon all faith leaders who propped up President Trump and have participated in the distribution of lies to repent and begin the process of atonement that could lead to peace and unity.
As disciples of Jesus, we advocate for the wholeness of all people, especially the poor and disenfranchised. We work to heal the deep injuries which have been caused in Jesus’ name. We work to reject the politics of fear and hate and seek to build a different world - one based in justice, equity, and access for all.
The lies perpetuated by President Trump have undermined our democracy. For our foundations to be strong, for our future to thrive, we must engage with real repentance and conciliation. Atonement cannot be found without accountability. Consequences and change must be real. Cheap apologies or disclaimers will never lead to true healing and the hard decisions we must make as a country.
In order to ensure the safety of our democracy and its people, we call upon government officials to immediately remove President Trump from office and for anyone who fed, fueled and fomented these attacks to be removed or resign.
