Conversation with Abu Kurke Kebato - 2 June 2021, 17.00h

Abu Kurke Kebato was one of the few survivors of the Left-to-die boat and ended up in the Netherlands after another attempt to reach Europe. Before that, Abu spent years in Libya, a country known for the appalling conditions for migrants, some of whom are even traded as slaves. The cooperation between the EU and Libya is only one illustration of a much wider developed EU policy to outsource its border control to third countries. As a result of this cooperation, refugees run the risk of getting stuck in a country without access to protection.

During an online live conversation, MEP Tineke Strik will talk to Abu about his experience as a refugee in Libya, the Libyan detention centres and his challenges to reach the EU territory and find protection. Based on his experiences, we will discuss the necessary changes needed in the EU's migration policy.
