Demand Congress Enact Essential Limits on Presidential Immunity to Protect Democracy

JUST IN: The Supreme Court has officially ruled that Donald Trump has immunity for official acts that he performed as President. This means he potentially will not be held accountable for his actions leading to and during the January 6th Insurrection.

While we respect the judicial process, we agree with Justice Sotomayor’s dissenting opinion that “no man is above the law”. The 6-3 decision issued on Monday undermines the principles of accountability and the rule of law that are fundamental to our democracy.

We urge Congress to take immediate action to legislate clear and specific limits on presidential immunity. The following measures should be considered:

  1. Define Exceptions: Establish clear exceptions to presidential immunity for actions that constitute abuse of power, obstruction of justice, or violations of constitutional rights.

  2. Independent Review: Create an independent body to review and investigate allegations of misconduct by the president, ensuring unbiased oversight.

  3. Whistleblower Protections: Strengthen protections for whistleblowers who expose presidential misconduct, safeguarding their rights and encouraging transparency.

  4. State-Level Collaboration: Encourage cooperation between federal and state authorities to address potential violations of state laws by the president.

These measures will help maintain the integrity of the presidency while ensuring that no individual is above the law. We call on our elected representatives to prioritize this issue and work towards enacting these critical reforms.
