Elect the president by national popular vote

The petition to state governments reads:

"Join the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact so the United States can elect future presidents by popular vote."

There are millions of votes that remain to be counted, but one thing is clear: Joe Biden will win the popular vote. Despite that fact, the outcome of the election remains uncertain.

We’ve seen this before: In both 2000 and 2016, the Democratic candidates “lost” the election while winning more votes than their Republican opponents.

The electoral college is an outdated and unnecessary historical relic. Can you sign our emergency petition urging state governments to elect the president by popular vote?

Tell state governments: Elect the president by national popular vote.

The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact is an agreement among a group of U.S. states and the District of Columbia to award all their electoral votes to whichever presidential candidate wins the overall popular vote in the 50 states and the District of Columbia. Crucially, because the decision on how to award their electoral votes is up to the states, it can be enacted without a Constitutional amendment.

It’s too late to enact the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact for the 2020 election – and we must fight in the days and weeks ahead to ensure that every vote is counted. As opportunities come up, we’ll let you know how to get involved.

But today, for now, can you please take a moment to sign our emergency petition urging state governments to elect the president by popular vote?
