End Seattle Police Dept. Use of Patrol Horses!

Seattle Police Department's Mounted Patrol Unit is an outdated and unnecessary use of public resources. As the Seattle City Council makes budget decisions, it’s time to call for the removal of funding for this costly and ineffective unit. Horses are prey animals with heightened senses, and the loud noises, chaotic environments, and crowds encountered in urban settings can cause them significant stress and anxiety. Horses in mounted patrol units across the country have been harmed while working. Furthermore, police departments should not be using horses to intimidate and control people.

The Seattle City Council is currently considering phasing out the use of horses in the police department. We need to encourage them to officially adopt this change in the upcoming budget. Please contact the Seattle City Council and ask them to redirect these funds from Seattle Police Mounted Patrol Unit to programs that better serve our community's needs. It will be most effective to keep comments focused on animal welfare and budget issues.

If a Seattle resident, please contact your city council member and urge them to end funding for the Mounted Patrol Unit. Additionally, there will be a public hearing on October 16th at 5pm. We encourage those who can attend to sign up for public comment and ask the council to end funding. See the meeting agenda with details on how to provide public comment here.

Use your voice to make a difference! Let’s ensure our city’s budget reflects our values. Once you have contacted your council member or after you have attended the public hearing, please fill out this form and let us know that you took action!
