Could you stand for Parliament?

Express interest in becoming a GE candidate

UPDATE - April 2024

Most selections have now completed or are underway. We are still welcoming new expressions of interest but please be aware we are now looking for candidates willing to be 'on standby' to stand in seats at short notice, eg - where a selected candidate has had to resign for personal reasons.

If you are interested in being one of our 'standby' candidates please do express interest using this form.

We are aiming for a full slate of diverse candidates across England and Wales at the next General Election - that means over 570 Greens standing for Parliament, for the first time.

To make this happen, we are recruiting a pool of General Election candidates who would be willing to stand outside of their home area, either somewhere else in their region, or even elsewhere in England or Wales.

We are particularly keen to seek interest from people from groups under-represented in politics such as women, people of colour, under 30 or disabled.

Could that be you?

Standing in a General Election is different to council elections - if you're eligible to vote in General Elections, you can stand anywhere in the UK. And although it's usually helpful to be a local candidate, that tends to be lower on voters' list of priorities than which party they represent - and in fact sometimes a fresh outside voice can be exactly what's needed.

To apply as a General Election candidate, you need to be a paid-up member of the Green Party.

What's involved in standing?

If selected, your level of commitment and activity as candidate would be decided in agreement with the local party(s), in line with their election plans.

There are many things a General Election candidate can choose to do - but every candidate is part of a team, who can help with standing - eg, substitute speakers/neighbouring candidates may be able to attend hustings if candidates are busy, and so on. If selected to be one of our candidates, there will be support available from the local and regional party and also through the Green Party's national training scheme.

Green Party members can read more at members.greenparty.org.uk/stand.

How do I apply?

To express interest, please complete this form to let us know a little about yourself and what kind of candidacy you may be interested in.

By expressing interest via this form, you will be added to the pool of interested candidates.

When local parties with an open selection process invite applications from external candidates, we will email this pool of potential nominees and invite them to apply, with information about how to do so.

You will submit your application to the local party Election Returning Officer (ERO). To be validly on the selection ballot you need two local members to nominate you. The ERO will make best efforts to find local members willing to do this - they will share the nomination form (only) with potential nominators and if two local members agree, the ERO will confirm you are shortlisted.

Please note there is no guarantee that any vacancies will be available, or that your candidacy will be taken forward if you do apply - it is up to each local party to decide whether their members are willing to nominate you, and then the local members vote on who to select as their candidate.
