This year's World Climate Conference, COP29, is set to take place in Azerbaijan. However, instead of joining forces to combat climate change, President Ilham Aliyev's regime finances itself through the sale of dirty oil and gas. He even sells Russian gas to Europe, profiting from Putin’s criminal war of aggression. For years, the regime has silenced and imprisoned critical voices.

Dr. Gubad Ibadoghlu, a renowned economist and a leading critic of the state oil and gas industry, has been imprisoned by Azerbaijan and is currently under house arrest. Despite having a heart condition and urgently needing medical care abroad, he is barred from leaving the country.

President Aliyev, we demand freedom for Dr. Gubad Ibadoghlu and an end to the repression of human rights defenders in Azerbaijan!

Mr. Ibadoghlu stands against corruption, autocratic rule, and advocates for a democratic Azerbaijan. His imprisonment is an attack on freedom of expression and undermines Azerbaijan’s credibility as the host of COP29.

Our Demands:

• The immediate release of Dr. Gubad Ibadoghlu and all political prisoners in Azerbaijan.

• An end to Russian gas exports to Europe via Azerbaijan, thereby stopping the indirect funding of the war against Ukraine.

• The cessation of all oil and gas production in Azerbaijan - fossil fuels belong in history books, not in the host country of this year's World Climate Conference.
