#FreeThePill - Help Bring Birth Control Over The Counter
You go to your local drug store when you need cold medicine, Plan B, condoms, tampons ... and you should be able to go there to buy birth control. If getting birth control over-the-counter is common sense to you, you’re not alone. Birth control pills can help you take control of your sexual health, but only if you have the means and time to get a prescription at the doctor first. It’s time we change that. It's time birth control becomes available over-the-counter, covered by insurance, and without age restriction. It's time to #FreeThePill.
That’s why Advocates for Youth is proud to announce we're joining the long-standing #FreeThePill campaign with a new youth-led effort! Young people are tired of jumping through hoops to get the contraception they need, and they’re tired of not being trusted to make their own healthcare decisions. So we're going to lead this fight for change, and we're going to win!
Ready to Help?
Young people (ages 14-24) who sign up on the right-hand side will receive materials to participate in our Digital Campaign to grow support for over-the-counter birth control.
Anyone who signs up will receive a Digital Toolkit with everything you need, including:
- A description of the action and our goals! We're excited to flood social media feeds with images of what it would look like if birth control pills were available on the shelves at CVS, Walgreens, RiteAid and more. But we need YOU to help us do that!
- Sample post language and examples of what your posts can look like
- Helpful tips for how to respond to comments and answer questions
We're going to help people imagine what it looks like to have birth control pills available on the shelves at drug stores, without a prescription, for all ages. First online, and then for real!
Did you know that Emergency Contraception, like Plan B, used to only be available with a prescription as well? It’s available over-the-counter today because people organized, educated their community, and demanded it. We can do the same thing with birth control. But only if we find some dedicated young people to go all-in. So if you or someone you know is a young person who wants to launch this campaign, sign up to join the movement today!
