Gaza Peace Actions on Congress

Why Target Congresspeople?
There are three major reasons to target Congress:

1. Congress controls the purse strings. If the US government does not allocate emergency aid to Israel, or decreases military aid, it seriously hinders Israel’s ability to continue to murder Palestinians with impunity.

2. The President is influenced by members of his own party.  If a significant number of Democrats demand a ceasefire or a cutoff of aid, it will force the administration to change their position.

3. The Democrats are moveable on this issue, as the party is significantly out of step with the base, with 80% of Democratic voters supporting a ceasefire.

What Do We Need to Do?
We know that in this moment, we need many more events to demand Congress reject aid for genocide. One thing you can do is to the offices in-district of your Senators.  We think Democrats, if they haven’t already supported a ceasefire, as mentioned above, are the most moveable, but we also encourage events at Republican offices if you are not represented by a Democrat.

Use this tracker to see if your Senator has called for a ceasefire already. (If you are interested in targeting your representative in the House instead, you can also use this tracker.) We recommend actions targeting Senators who have not called for a ceasefire already.

FAQ:

Q: I’m willing to organize an action but need more information, where do I get it?

A: Great! Use this toolkit to help plan your local action. And make sure to fill out the survey on this site to get connected with others.

Q: Can I get help from an experienced organizer to organize a sit-in or protest at a Senate office?

A: Yes. If you’d like to talk to an organizer about how to plan an action, fill out the survey on this site to get connected with an experienced organizer.

Q: Where else can I learn more?

A: Check out US Campaign for Palestinian Rights' resources to learn about how to take action to stop U.S. military aid to Israel and demand a ceasefire and just peace.

Q: What Members of Congress should be targets of the protests demanding a “no” vote on supplemental aid for the Israeli military’s attacks on Gaza?

A: You can find a list of members of Congress who have cosponsored a resolution calling for a ceasefire in Palestine here. All others need much more public pressure, especially before a vote on $10 billion in additional aid for war and genocide.

Senate offices are a top priority for visits and protest: most Senators have not called for a ceasefire. Of the 100 U.S. Senators, only one, Bernie Sanders, has called on Congress to block funding to Israel.

Q: Who will get my information if I complete the survey?

A: Organizers with the Gaza Peace Project will contact you about the actions you are interested in joining, and whether you are interested in having your contact information shared with others organizing actions in your area.
