Interview Questions

INTERVIEW FORMAT

Here are the questions you can use to conduct interviews with cleaners. Fill in the form with the answers the interviewee gives you. Below there is more information on how to conduct the interviews.

Introduction

Explain the Cleaners United Campaign Goal is “to improve the working conditions of cleaners in the UK in one significant way by building a national campaign that leads to local campaigns, wins narrative change and legislative change”.

Convey the idea that the work cleaners do is very important for society, as the coronavirus pandemic has shown recently (and infections in the hospitals and other pandemics did previously) and that society and the government and employers should recognise them.

Make sure they know that anything they share with us is confidential and that by conducting the interview they consent to us using their information to gather anonymous data and stories for the campaign, and may be contacted to see if they want to be involved in the campaign.

During

Tease out the issues the interviewee brings up when they are talking about their role and what improvements they would want to see. Here is a list of issues you may want to ask about if the worker can’t think of any:

  • Sick pay

  • Wages

  • Annual leave

  • Parental leave

  • PPE

  • Outsourcing

  • Discrimination

  • Sexual harassment

  • Zero hour/short contracts

  • No contracts

  • Excessive workloads

  • Pension

  • Respect

  • COVID-19

End

Thank them for their time and ask them if they know other cleaners that are experiencing work issues. If so see if they would be willing to introduce them to you or interview them themselves.

Let them know that once we have finished the Listening Campaign at the end of the summer we will be back in touch so that cleaners can shape the direction of the campaign.
