From Scram to The Lead

Not too long ago, as Brexit battles reached a fever pitch, you subscribed to Scram. A short while later, Scram was compelled to go on hiatus. The world has changed since then, but the issues it covered and campaigned on remain, and have become even more urgent: racism, climate change, inequality, the hostile environment policy, corruption; Brexit.
Three years into perhaps the most irresponsible government in UK history, we are watching a surreal and dangerous leadership contest in a bloated Tory party bent on legislating away more and more of our democratic rights. This, while the nation is mired in a cost of living crisis - from fuel to housing - and while the effects of climate change are starting to hit the UK with greater force than ever.
The need for an incisive, determined campaigning magazine is as great as it’s ever been, and so Scram is relaunching - with a new team and under a new name: The Lead.
We’ll be bringing you reporting, analysis, and, of course, campaigns, with an even greater and more sophisticated toolbox for making a difference. In the coming weeks and months, you will hear from writers including Chaminda Jayanetti, on why unaffordable housing is a key feature, not a bug, of the UK economy; Evie Muir, on domestic violence survivors organising to help each other where the state has failed; Andy West, on school discipline and prisons; Leila Al-Shami, on the need for a new kind of solidarity after the invasion of Ukraine; and Christine Berry, on how a national debt amnesty would actually work.
But before we launch, we want to hear from you - our readers and our community - about where you want us to go.
On the right is a short survey to help us shape our coverage and our campaigns. If this isn't something you've got time for, we understand. But if you want to double down, read up, and fight on, please take a few minutes to respond.
And if you do respond, there’ll be a stock of treats in store - from priority access to our events, to an earlier glimpse of our new content than anyone else. We hope you’ll join us.
Yours,
Dimi Reider
Editors, The Lead.
