It's time! HAW-UAW Harvard Academic Workers Authorization Card

Welcome to HAW-UAW! After a majority of us have signed cards choosing HAW-UAW as our union, we will seek official recognition from the university administration through a fair process that verifies our majority support so we can start bargaining a contract. This could happen through a voluntary process agreed upon with Harvard or through a neutral party such as the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).

Collective bargaining means more rights and more power to shape our lives at Harvard. Collectively we have more power to negotiate with Harvard than we have as individuals. No one will pay any dues or fees until the academic workers covered by a proposed agreement have democratically approved that contract with Harvard.

Without a union:
  • Harvard unilaterally determines our working conditions and can change them at any time without our consent.
With a union:
  • Each unit elects a bargaining committee that gathers input from researchers and teachers in that unit.
  • The bargaining committees will negotiate contracts on equal footing with Harvard. These contracts can only be approved democratically, through a vote of members in each unit.
  • These contracts determine our terms and conditions of employment and are binding and enforceable, through appeal to a neutral arbitrator when necessary.

"I consider it important, indeed urgently necessary, for intellectual workers to get together, both to protect their own economic status and, also, generally speaking, to secure their influence in the political field."

-Albert Einstein, on why he joined the faculty union at Princeton as a charter member
