#LetCentralBreathe - Join the Campaign for Clean Air in Central Bristol

Ani & Simon Stafford-Townsend are campaigning for clean air in Central

An estimated 300 people a year die from air pollution related illness. Recently, a coroner "made legal history by ruling that air pollution was a cause of the death of a nine-year-old girl". That girl was Ella Kissi-Debrah, and the ruling follows years of campaigning by her mother, Rosamund Kissi-Debrah.

Here in Bristol, we have seen years of inaction from Labour Mayor Marvin Rees. Shortly before the 2016 Council elections, Simon even wrote an article calling attention to Labour's efforts to block Green attempts to add action on air pollution to the Council's budget.

We live in the city, by a main road, and we worry about the impact of air pollution on all our health. And as parents, we are particularly concerned about the potential impact on our child.

But what can we do about it?

As you'd expect, air pollution is a big concern to Greens. We have long called for a Clean Air Zone with charging to incentivise cleaner forms of travel. First Labour claimed, falsely, that it wouldn't be legal. Then they claimed, falsely, that a Clean Air Zone would harm the poorest in Bristol. As the ruling in Ella Kissi-Debrah's case has shown, the greatest harm is caused by inaction.

What we can do about it is act collectively.
