Justification for strike for schools / colleges

Letter to Headteacher / Deputy Head / PSHE teachers

Dear Head Teacher

Please note, my child will be going on the school climate strike this Friday and will not be attending school all day.

Please give my child your full support and encouragement for doing the right thing and caring for the Planet and all life in this global emergency.

Pollution is causing 100,000 species to go extinct annually!

We have only one year left to save the planet!

On top of this, Earth’s resources, including oil, food, and water, may run out sooner than we think.

I hope attending this demonstration will help my child to feel empowered and able to stand up for what is right, and for a better future for himself.

I support him in attending the youth strike as part of active civic engagement, which is a core part of the curriculum. People under 18 years can't vote, but with more of their life in the future, rather than the past, it is they who are most affected by climate breakdown.

Many other forms of protest have had little impact on the status quo of burning more and more fossil fuels.

Nothing like enough is being done by governments throughout the world, including our own UK government.

Solar and wind can provide all our energy needs. Germany has the new Quant water-powered electric car, and this nano technology can also power homes etc. The first water-powered car (using a petrol engine) was invented in 1806. You can teach all this in science.

Active civic engagement and playing an active role in society is part of our duty as citizens. Voting every four years is not the only part of the democratic process. Children have no ability to vote, and have no say in the security of their own future. Decisions are made by much older people - leaders across the world are mostly over 50 years, so less of their time on Earth will be affected.

Other things play a role in the democratic process, such as visiting local councillors, writing to MPs, attending local meetings, and going on demonstrations. We have protected rights to protest. It is an acknowledged part of our democratic system.

Young people now need to take charge of their future, because the previous generation has failed to secure a safe climate for children, even though the science has been clear for 30 years.

We can’t hide the truth from children and youth any longer; it is immoral to do so. Adults must face up to what they’re leaving the next generation, and be open about it with young people.

Adults must facilitate the demands of the young to not be left with a polluted and unsafe planet and must stand with them.

Please update your curriculum in every subject to make it relevant to today’s emergency, and also offer healthy organic vegan meals and snacks at dinner and break times.

Show educational and inspiring films such as -

The Age of Stupid

Before the Flood - Leonardo DiCaprio

Samsara - Ron Fricke

Home - Yann Arthus-Bertrand

Earthlings - Shaun Monson, Joaquin Phoenix

Gandhi - Richard Attenborough

Silent Running - Douglas Trumbull, Bruce Dern.

And above all, please teach compassion and respect for all life, through word and example.

Thank you

Kind regards
