NEU Pledge 2021
The elections taking place on 6th May are a chance to send a message to the Westminster Government that urgent action is needed to end child poverty.
The pandemic has shone a light on the reality of child poverty in the UK. Before the pandemic 4.3 million children were growing up trapped in poverty. New research from the Resolution Foundation predicts that by the time of the next General Election, 730,000 more young people will be caught in poverty’s grip.
Members of the National Education Union see every day in their classrooms how child poverty limits the life chances of their students. On average 30% of children - or nine pupils in every classroom of 30 – are officially poor. That’s why the NEU is calling on the Westminster Government to:
- Take action so that no child is left behind during and after the pandemic
- Develop a cohesive child poverty reduction strategy
- Commit to a target date by which child poverty will be eradicated in the UK.
The NEU is asking all Mayoral candidates in the elections to pledge their support.
Will you pledge to do everything in your power as Mayor so that no child is left behind?
We will display all pledges received on the website on Wednesday, 14 April. Please add your pledge here.
Candidates that sign the pledge will receive on email a briefing on child poverty in their area along with material to use on social media to show their support for the no child left behind campaign.
Thank you in advance for your support.
Best wishes for the election campaign.
