Sign on to our message of support for Leonard Peltier now.

Leonard Peltier is the longest-serving political prisoner in U.S. history, serving two life sentences in a maximum-security federal prison for a conviction based on coerced confessions (which were later recanted) and lack of evidence, which would not hold up in court today.

His co-defendants, the men principally charged with murdering FBI agents on the Pine Ridge Indian reservation in South Dakota in 1975, were found not guilty on grounds of self-defense. Yet, 49 years later, at the age of 79, Mr. Peltier is still in prison for the “crime” of aiding and abetting.

Leonard’s parole hearing was on Monday, June 10th and we sent more than 30,000 direct messages to the Parole Commission and made hundreds of calls asking for his immediate release.

Now we wait. The Commission may take as long as a month to make a decision and until then there is nothing more we can do to help them decide.

But there is one more action we can take to help Leonard. We can tell Leonard personally that we stand with him. We can bring him some comfort and support in this time of need.

Full message text:

Dear Leonard Peltier,

Your continued incarceration is a failure demonstrating the systemic inequities of the U.S. criminal justice system -- but you are not alone.

In coalition with many partners, including NDN Collective and Amnesty International, we sent 30,455 direct messages and made 716 phone calls urging the U.S. Parole Commission to grant parole and finally secure your freedom. We’ve also sent thousands of messages to the Biden administration asking for your release.

You should be able to live out the rest of your life with your family on your ancestral homelands -- not continue to suffer in a jail cell you should have been freed from a long time ago.

We stand with you and we will not stop fighting for you until you are free.

With love and support,

Judith LeBlanc and the members of Native Organizers Alliance across Turtle Island
