NQT & Student Webinar Series
The Edge Hill Education Society are working with the National Education Union to host a series of webinars specifically for trainee teachers. The sessions are being held online and have been designed to help you at this point in your career.
The following webinars were previously open to trainee teachers who qualified in 2021. However, we are now accepting any trainee teacher who is a member of the NEU. If you are not a member then you can join here. It is completely free to join as a trainee teacher.
All sessions will be held online via Zoom, and the webinar link will be shared with you the day before each session.
Understanding Looked After Children in Education with Phil Watson
4th March 2021 at 6pm
This session will focus on Looked After Children and the relationship between the teacher and the child. Phil will address curriculum issues as well as tips on how to partner with foster carers, adopter parents and birth parents, while using anecdotes and stories rather statistics.
Phil has extensive experience in working with Looked After Children and will also address any questions or queries throughout the session.
Social Class, Poverty and Educational Underachievement: Professor Diane Reay

In this webinar Diane will examine how poverty and deprivation shape educational processes and outcomes, exploring the state English education system and the major inequalities that underpin it.
Focusing specifically on inequalities of class and race, Diane will examine the educational experiences of those children and young people who benefit the least from our educational system. Finally, Diane will talk about how we might address those inequalities and suggest what a socially just education system needs to look like.
English as an Additional Language with Catharine Driver
25th March 2021 at 6pm
Catharine’s session will look at developing awareness of the range of EAL learners and how to assess their needs. Catharine will also focus on understanding EAL pupils' prior knowledge in order to plan effective lessons and understanding the key features of second language acquisition and how this impacts on learning. The session will review a range of practical class and subject-based strategies to develop language and literacy.
By the end of the session, you should have an improved professional knowledge of EAL and have increased confidence in planning and supporting learning activities for EAL learners.
