Our economy will never provide workers what they need as long as we have a two-tiered wage system: Abolish the tipped minimum wage.

In 2021, 34% of tipped wage workers reported their tips and wages combined didn’t meet their state’s minimum wage -- and 35% of tipped workers reported experiencing wage theft in the last year.

Workers should be paid fairly for their work. The epidemic of employers stealing wages from workers who are paid a subminimum wage will not stop until we abolish the tipped minimum wage. We must raise the wage floor in America to one that can serve as a foundation for a robust economy, ensure all workers share in the unprecedented prosperity of our nation, and help prevent wealth inequality from destabilizing our democracy.

The movement to abolish the tipped minimum wage is gaining steam. Just last month, the Chicago City Council voted 36-10 to phase out the tipped minimum wage in the city over a period of 5 years. It joins Los Angeles in doing so, two of the largest cities in the United States.

As long as workers aren’t being paid a living wage, our society -- and our democracy -- will always be weakened by extreme income inequality.
