Pledge to build a world without police

SURJ is calling on white people to pledge not to call the police. And, given that there are relatively few viable alternatives to police right now, this pledge requires ongoing commitments -- not only to not calling the police, but also to creating and supporting alternatives to policing that are rooted in nuanced and holistic community safety practices.

I pledge to begin building a world in which police and policing are unnecessary -- a world in which communities care for neighbors in a way that makes violence a thing of the past, and a world in which there are viable alternatives to policing. As part of building that world, I pledge to not call the police -- especially when the subject of that call is a person of color or someone who identifies as part of a historically vulnerable community. I understand that policing has a history steeped in white supremacy, and that I have a role to play in divesting from white supremacy by divesting from the systems that hold up and support white supremacy. I pledge to build alternatives to policing in my community that better serve *all* members of my community, and to continuously examining my own biases through political education, deep reflection, and engagement through action.
