Protect our education staff, students and our communities
Sign our petition to Boris Johnson:
Over the Autumn term, we have seen infection rates climb in our education settings, as more and more pupils and staff self-isolate, and learning is disrupted. The Government has failed to protect all those working so hard across education.
In December, many local authorities and councils took the correct view to move to online learning for the last few days of term, only to be met with legal threats from Government. Days later as London, parts of the South East and East of England were plunged into tier 4, we learnt about rumours around a delay to the start of the new term in January.
We are calling on government to:
Delay reopening schools and colleges in January, with online learning for all except the children of key workers and the most vulnerable children - this will help our school leaders make plans for their settings and prevent the spread of the new strain
Implement mass testing in our schools and colleges- this includes recruiting additional staff and volunteers to administer tests safely.
Prioritise vaccination of education staff - too many of our colleagues are having to self-isolate or are getting sick.
Work with education unions to develop a recovery plan for education.
