The last time Congress raised the minimum wage -- to $7.25 an hour -- was in 2009. Since then, due to rising inflation, the value of that $7.25 per hour has decreased by 27%.

With a $7.25 minimum wage, we are condemning millions of American workers to financial hardship and poverty. 30% of American workers -- over 44 million people -- are paid less than $17 per hour. Many of these low-paying jobs are concentrated in states with right-wing legislatures.

Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Representative Bobby Scott (VA-03) have introduced the Raise the Wage Act of 2023 which would gradually raise the minimum wage to $17 per hour by 2028 and give nearly 28 million Americans a boost in income.

The Patriotic Millionaires Vice-Chair Stephen Prince said it best:

“For years, workers have fought to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour. But while the federal minimum wage, still just $7.25 an hour, has remained unchanged for over a decade, the cost of living hasn’t. As it becomes more and more expensive to get by in America, $15 is no longer an adequate goal. We need to go higher to reflect what it actually costs to live in America. Sanders is right to revise his minimum wage push to $17 an hour to save workers across the country from further suffocation.”

We couldn’t agree more.
