Call Congress: Save Our Economy, Reject Trump's Tariffs
.png)
When President Biden left office, the U.S. economy was STRONG, enjoying low jobless rates and outperforming others in post-pandemic growth.
After just a few months in office, Donald Trump has managed to tank it. His erratic roll out of tariffs against all US trading partners (and some places that are uninhabited by humans) has shaken consumer confidence and the stock market is volatile. Retirement accounts have lost value and consumer prices are expected to rise.
But Congress has the power to reject Trump's destructive tariffs and reject his authoritarian overreach. Call your Senators and Representative now to urge them to act.
1. Find your members of Congress's phone numbers. You can find your Senators' phone numbers here and you can find your Representative's number here.
2. Dial the number for their Washington DC office (it should start with 202), if you can't get through, try a different office. When someone answers or if you're instructed to leave a voicemail, you can use your own words or the relevant version of the script below, depending on whether they're a Democrat or Republican and a Senator or a House Representative.
3. Repeat for your other two members of Congress.
4. Fill out the form to let me know if you were able to get through and what the staffpeople said.
HOUSE DEMOCRATS
"Hi, my name is YOUR NAME. I'm a constituent from town/city, zipcode______ and I'm calling to ask the Representative to stand up to Trump and protect our economy by forcing votes on privileged resolutions to end the April 2 national emergency declaration to block Trump's disastrous tariffs. I also want to urge the Representative to launch discharge petitions for resolutions that Republicans try to block with procedural shenanigans and please call out any Republicans who don’t sign on. Please use your platform - press conferences, floor speeches, field hearings and social media - to call out Trump's illegal power grab and to shine a light on your Republican colleagues' complicity. Make it painful or them to stay silent.
Thank you for listening."
HOUSE REPUBLICANS
"Hi, my name is ______. I'm a constituent from town/city, zipcode______ and I'm calling to ask the Representative to protect our economy and uphold democracy by refusing to support any rule that strips privilege from resolutions related to the April 2 national emergency declaration. I also want to urge the Representative to sign a discharge petition if the resolution is buried - especially those that represent districts harmed by the president's tariffs. I urge the Representative to break ranks to protect Congressional authority over taxation and trade. The president is making an unprecedented and very dangerous constitutional power grab and you swore an oath to uphold our constitution. I will be watching closely to see what the representative will do.
Thank you for listening."
SENATE DEMOCRATS
"Hi, my name is ______. I'm a constituent from town/city, zipcode______ and I'm calling to ask the Senator to protect our economy and uphold democracy by forcing votes on privileged resolutions to terminate the April 2 national emergency declaration. I also want to urge the Senator to force votes to put Senate Republicans on the record, even if a veto override is unlikely. Representative to sign a discharge petition if the resolution is buried - especially those that represent districts harmed by the president's tariffs. And please flood the floor with speeches, talk to journalists and hold hearings to hammer home the message that Trump's tariffs are an abuse of power that threatens our economic stability and violates democratic checks and balances.
Thank you for listening."
SENATE REPUBLICANS
"Hi, my name is ______. I'm a constituent from town/city, zipcode______ and I'm calling to ask the Senator to protect our economy and uphold democracy by voting YES on privileged resolutions to end the emergency or block the tariffs—especially those from states that are hurting economically. I also want to ask the Senator to use their platform and voice to oppose Trump's abuse of power, even if they're not willing to challenge him directly. Please show that you're willing to stand up and draw the line on executive overreach. What you do right now will outlive Trump so please set the right precedent for the future of America and its democracy.
Thank you for listening."
