The campaign to pass a Right To Counsel for Evictions bill in Connecticut in 2021 has been gaining steam! Last week, the state legislature’s Housing Committee voted to hold a public hearing for Right To Counsel in the coming weeks.

We need the legislature to hear your story! This bill will not pass without the strong voice of tenants testifying at the public hearing.

How has eviction impacted you, your family, or your community? Do you have a story about how access to legal aid would have brought a better, fairer outcome?

This is a chance to make our voices heard: a chance to win legal counsel as a RIGHT, for everyone facing eviction!

Testimony can be submitted either verbally, via Zoom during the public hearing, or in advance via email or the CT General Assembly portal. We will guide everyone through the steps ahead of time. For anyone submitting verbal testimony via Zoom, it is STRONGLY recommended to ALSO submit the text of your testimony via email / portal so that nothing gets lost from the record.

Please sign up on this form to let us know you wish to testify for Right to Counsel. We will follow up with a guide for giving public testimony, including a template to help.

The public hearing date for Right To Counsel has not yet been set. We will notify you of the date as soon as it becomes available. For those with concerns about privacy and possible retaliation: there are ways we can work with you to keep your testimony anonymous.
