Join the Plan A Emergency Response
On September 17, school districts across North Carolina were given the okay for elementary schools to reopen at full capacity under Plan A, starting October 5th. The major difference between Plan A and Plan B is the requirement of social distancing. In Plan B, a minimum six-foot social distancing is required, while under Plan A it is merely “strongly recommended”. That means that districts may re-open their elementary schools at full capacity with only masks and some enhanced cleaning required, and still be fully in compliance.
We believe that this change places our educators into a needlessly dangerous situation. In light of this, NCAE is advising all educators not to enter a non-socially distanced classroom without a properly fitted N-95 mask. The risks to your health, and the health of your family and colleagues, are simply too great to be ignored.
If educators are not safe, our students are not safe, so personal health and safety must continue to be the primary concern for our public schools. And while proper PPE and social distancing is important, what is even more important is that we come together at this critical time. If this moment teaches us anything, it is that we must be prepared to look out for our own well-being. In that spirit, I hope that you can take these steps to build a strong base of support for safe and sustainable public schools in the midst of this ongoing crisis:
