This year’s COP29 climate summit is shaping up to be the most restricted and oppressive in history. Azerbaijan has already banned independent journalists from attending and begun its crackdown on civil society and independent media.

The UN’s COP Climate summit is supposed to be an opportunity for the world to come together to freely and transparently set their goals on climate.

This year’s summit in Azerbaijan is in direct violation of those principles and presents real threats to attendees.

Azerbaijan’s authoritarian government has cracked down on civil society, arrested journalists and activists, and violently dispersed environmental protests. Anyone who voices concerns about corruption and environmental dangers in Azerbaijan gets targeted and faces the threat of unjust imprisonment.
