Ahed Tamimi, the 16-year-old Palestinian girl who has been unjustly imprisoned by Israeli authorities for over a month is having her next hearing is on January 31st, cruelly timed with her 17th birthday.

Background information:

Ahed Tamimi has been in Israeli prison for over a month (since December 19th, 2017) and faces up to ten years if convicted. This punishment is just the latest outrageous example of the double standard for Palestinians compared to Israelis. According to the Defense for Children in Palestine, there are between 500-700 Palestinian children prosecuted by Israeli authorities every year.

Ahed’s arrest was not random. Her family has been on the frontlines of the organized resistance to the Occupation in their village of Nabi Saleh for years. Since 2009, their village’s land and sources of water have been systematically stripped from them by Israeli forces.

Her mother, Nariman, sits in Israeli prison as well. Her cousin, Nour, was arrested with Ahed and is thankfully free after three weeks in prison. Another cousin, Mohammed, was shot in the head on the day the infamous “slapping video” was taken. Another relative, Moustafa, was killed in 2011 when an Israeli soldier fired a tear gas canister at his face.
