While most other races in New Jersey have had their results reported, those in New Jersey’s Ninth Congressional District are still waiting for theirs. Though this may be attributed to a county-specific issue, the inconsistent reporting of the election results raises the question: why are there irregularities with the results of New Jersey Ninth’s Congressional primary, in particular?

The Zina Spezakis for Congress campaign contests the Board of Elections’ ability to transparently and honestly report the results of New Jersey Ninth’s Congressional race. They are formally requesting that the counting of ballots cease, and remain impounded in a neutral, secure location until a process by which representatives from each campaign can be present for the ballot counting can be formalized and put in place.

“The fate of our democracy depends on transparent elections that the people can believe in. How can the voters of New Jersey trust that their voice will be counted when there is no transparency in the process?” Spezakis said, “What does anyone have to hide by ensuring the ballots being processed and counted are observed carefully so that each vote is counted without interference? The Democratic Party cannot allow the fox into the hen house while our democracy hangs from such precarious thread nationally.” The New Jersey State Democratic Chairman is also the Passaic County Board of Elections Chairman.
