Right now, there is a bill in Congress that could bring that same joy throughout the country. The bill is led by Minnesota’s own Rep. Ilhan Omar in the House and Bernie Sanders in the Senate. Add your name to demand that Congress pass the Universal School Meals Act, and ensure that no child in this country goes hungry!

If passed, here's just some of what this legislation would accomplish:

• Permanently provide free breakfast, lunch, dinner, and a snack to all school children
• Put an end to "lunch shaming"
• Eliminate the outrage of student meal debt
• Increase reimbursement rates for school meals
• Provide additional incentives to schools for local food procurement
• Provide summer meals to all children and additional summer EBT funds to low-income families

It is a moral abomination that the richest country in the world, at the richest time in its history, would saddle school children with “lunch debt,” or even practice “lunch shaming” by putting a stamp or wristband on students who can’t pay.

No child should go hungry in this country.

During the pandemic, Congress passed legislation for universal school meals. This program should be made permanent.
