Republicans in the Texas Legislature have introduced SB 147, a racist bill to ban Chinese citizens – including green card holders and dual citizens – from owning their family homes.

SB 147, introduced by State Sen. Lois Kolkhorst with the support of Gov. Greg Abbott, targets the property rights of hardworking immigrants based solely on ethnicity.

It is an especially grievous insult to those who left an authoritarian regime.

It is just another version of the historic Alien Land Laws, which forced Asian Americans to rent land in dozens of states during the 19th and 20th centuries.

Even if the bill is amended to protect green card holders and U.S. citizens, the racist intent is clear. The Abbott-Kolkhorst Chinese-American homeownership ban is an attack on the American dream.
