The #MeToo movement has led to powerful and influential men being named and held accountable for their acts of sexual aggression or assault, past and present.

In the midst of this moment, a young black woman named Cyntoia Brown is serving multiple life sentences for killing a 43-year-old man who solicited her for sex. At this point, she'd been trafficked into sex slavery, repeatedly raped and abused, and held at gunpoint. She was 16; she will not be eligible for parole until she is 69 years old.

Cyntoia was tried as an adult and convicted of first degree murder, first degree felony murder and aggravated robbery. The prosecution argued that self-defense wasn't her motive since she stole her john's wallet after shooting him.

Cyntoia was a teenage girl, trapped in sex slavery, and who was repeatedly sexually assaulted. She was trying to escape, but because she wasn't a perfect victim, our justice system treated her like a hardened criminal instead of a child in need of help.

It feels like we may be ushering in a sea change in our culture around sexual violence, consent, and bodily autonomy. We cannot leave behind marginalized and disenfranchised people as we move towards greater accountability for sexual abusers.
