Sign the petition: Demand social media platforms protect voters from disinformation
As Americans have begun casting their ballots, we’ve seen increasingly dangerous efforts to intimidate, suppress, and deceive voters -- many times via social media posts that clearly violate platforms’ policies. When that content comes from high-reach accounts, the posts have often already been seen by millions before platforms take any action -- by then the damage has been done.
Disinformation about voting is one of the biggest challenges facing modern election authorities. In an age when false information can be magnified and disseminated to millions with a single tweet or Facebook post, combatting that disinformation is all the more important.
Platforms must do more to address these harms before people are exposed. Much as live TV events are broadcast on a short delay to protect viewers, social media platforms should implement rapid screening to protect voters.
We demand that social media platforms implement Voter Protection Preclearance, a process that would require human review of election-related content from accounts with more than 100,000 followers that already had posts labeled for election integrity violations
Content that violates civic integrity or violence policies would be preemptively blocked. All other posts would be published within 10 minutes. It’s not much to ask in order to fight misinformation and protect our elections.
Online disinformation has increasingly become a method of attack for political campaigns in the digital age. We must demand that social media platforms take immediate action to protect voters!
