Sign the petition: Don't divert public school funds to private schools!

Across the nation, our public education system—a cornerstone of learning and development—is under threat. The resurgence of private school voucher schemes, historically rooted in efforts to undermine desegregation, now poses a significant challenge to the integrity and funding of public schools. These programs, championed under the guise of "parental choice," risk diverting essential public funds to private institutions without accountability, transparency, or equity.

South Carolina faces GOP efforts to expand an "educational scholarship trust fund" that would route $90 million away from public schools, widening the educational opportunity gap. This expansion includes removing income caps and eligibility restrictions, further prioritizing private interests over the public good.

In Texas, Gov. Greg Abbott is targeting fellow Republicans who oppose vouchers, pouring tens of millions of dollars into campaigns to unseat them. This aggressive push for vouchers in Texas, despite strong opposition from both Democrats and rural Republicans who view public schools as the lifeblood of their communities, highlights the national momentum behind a movement that threatens to undermine public education across the country.

In Georgia, the passage of Senate Bill 233 marks a significant shift towards the privatization of education funding. This bill, which grants families $6,500 a year in state funds for private schooling, represents a clear move away from the commitment to public education.

Across the nation, Republicans are dismantling the public education system. The future of our nation's children, the health of our economies, and the fabric of our communities depend on a robust public education system. We cannot allow the interests of a few to undermine the educational rights and opportunities of the many.
