Sign the petition: Elect the president by national popular vote
We are one step closer to electing the president by national popular vote. Maine has recently joined the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact (NPVIC)--an agreement between states to award their electoral votes to whichever presidential candidate wins the most votes nationally. This historic decision is a major step toward a truly democratic presidential election process.
Our current system, the Electoral College, allows a minority of voters in swing states to disproportionately influence election outcomes, undermining the principle of equal representation. The presidential elections in 2000 and 2016, have painfully highlighted flaws in this system. In both instances the candidate who lost the national popular vote still claimed the presidency.
Electing the president by national popular vote would guarantee that every vote cast—no matter which state you reside in—would count equally toward electing the next president. However, it only goes into effect after enough states with a combined total of 270 electoral votes have joined the compact.
Eighteen states and the District of Columbia have joined the NPVIC, with a combined 209 electoral votes. We are calling on all remaining states to join the compact for a truly fair and representative democracy.
It’s time to make sure the candidate who gets the most votes wins.
Sign the petition to your state legislators: It’s time we elect the president by national popular vote.
