Fake abortion clinics masquerade as healthcare providers. These “health centers”— thousands existing across the country—are created to confuse and manipulate pregnant people with the goal of preventing them from learning about or accessing abortion services. Not only do their “clinics” give false info about abortion, but they also often refuse to provide evidence-based contraceptive choices to their patients, including oral contraceptives, IUDs, or condoms— the very tools that help prevent unplanned pregnancy!  

How can a “reproductive health center” that opposes basic contraceptive methods provide comprehensive family planning services? It can’t!

And yet, fake clinics have received at least $4 million and possibly even more than $10 million in forgivable federal loans from the paycheck protection program in the first COVID-19 bailout package. In other words, our tax money is going to promote anti-abortion propaganda and misinformation that is harming people.

Fake clinic networks Heartbeat International and Obria were both recipients of this aid, on top of the millions also given to anti-LGBTQ+ and anti-abortion lobbying groups in the same program, while actual healthcare provider Planned Parenthood was forced to give back $60 million because of the Title X “gag rule” implemented in 2019.

These clinics are frequently more accessible than abortion clinics in the U.S. Their growth comes at a time when abortion rights across the U.S. have faced numerous barriers, especially from conservative state legislators, that restrict their ability to function. Meanwhile, legitimate health care providers like Planned Parenthood and independent clinics are struggling, leaving millions of LGBTQ+ folks, people of color, low-income, and rural Americans without access to reproductive health care.  

As unemployment benefits are slashed and legit business are denied government help, fake clinics have been granted millions of COVID-19 bailout cash to continue their harmful, anti-abortion manipulation of vulnerable pregnant people.
