Sign the petition: Protect and expand Social Security by taxing the rich

The Social Security Board of Trustees has released their annual report on the current and projected status of the program.

The good news: the trustees have pushed their projections for insolvency–the point at which revenues will be insufficient to cover benefits–by one year to 2035.

The bad news: this is an improvement of just one year, and does not change the fact that Social Security will be forced to cut benefits at some point in the next decade if reforms are not enacted. As it stands now, after 2035, retiree benefactors will only receive 83% of their full benefits.

Meanwhile, Social Security still faces direct attacks. The GOP’s proposed budget calls for raising the retirement age as well as cuts of over $1.5 trillion to the program. At the same time, their legislative focus continues to be on giving massive tax handouts to the ultra-wealthy instead of protecting the economic well-being of their constituents.

Enough with sacrificing Americans’ hard-earned benefits for a wealthy elite! We must protect and expand Social Security in order to ensure full benefits for all Americans, and pay for it by requiring millionaires and billionaires to contribute their fair share.

We’re calling on Congress to act: tax the rich to fund Social Security, Medicare, and the programs the American people need, extend the lifespan of these programs, and stop the tax breaks that help turn millionaires into billionaires and billionaires into trillionaires.

Sign the petition to Congress: Protect and expand Social Security by making the ultra-wealthy pay their fair share.
