Sign the petition: Protect children online from Big Tech

The petition to Congress reads:

"Pass legislation to protect children online from Big Tech’s dangerously unregulated and predatory business model."

Digital platforms have become vital spaces for learning, socializing, and relaxing for children and teens. Yet, young people and their developmental vulnerabilities are being targeted in unfair ways by these same digital platforms!

Big Tech platforms are designed to maximize revenue by increasing engagement and facilitating data collection, which puts children at risk. Report after report has linked the pressure to spend more time on digital media platforms with the growing mental health crisis in young people, increased risk of sexual predation, and decreased overall wellbeing in kids and teens.

Sign the petition to tell Congress to take action to protect kids NOW!

Children and teens should be able to engage freely with the digital environment without being manipulated into spending more time online, spending more money, watching ads targeted to their vulnerabilities, surrendering more data, or engaging with content that undermines their wellbeing.

For example, an April 2022 report from Fairplay found that “Instagram’s algorithm promotes and helps grow a pro-eating disorder “bubble” that reaches around 20 million users on the platform, and brings in at least $1.8 million for Meta in profits.”

Congress has the ability to make children safer, give parents and caregivers peace of mind, and promote an internet that serves children, rather than taking advantage of them. We urge Congress to use that power, and create the internet American children and teens deserve.
