Sign the petition: Protect Lāhainā residents from predatory developers & scammers!
In the aftermath of Maui's tragic wildfires, predatory land developers are cold calling survivors and lurking around emergency shelters to speak with residents of Lāhainā. Not to offer help or give comfort in the wake of a tragedy — but to capitalize on the vulnerable homeowners who have just lost everything.
Lāhainā is a community with a thousand years of precious native Hawaiian history: from landmarks like the Great Banyan Tree to its storied history as a hub of political, economic, spiritual, and artistic significance. It was the original capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii. Now, instead of recognizing the devastating cultural impact of this tragedy, real estate developers and scammers alike see an opportunity to profit.
The Governor of Hawaii recently said, “Residents are being approached about selling fire-damaged home sites, by people posing as real estate agents who may have ill intent.”
Hawaiians have already had to fight to keep their culture alive and for vital resources with the boom of tourism and industrial plantations throughout the islands. We can help them focus on the restoration of Lāhainā by urging Congress to protect the rights of local residents.
Add your name and demand that Congress protect the property rights of native and local Hawaiians affected by the fires in Lāhainā.
