Sign the petition: Tear Confederate statues down
It is long past time to tear down Southern Confederate monuments to white supremacy.
This country was founded on white supremacy, and white supremacy still runs it. Confederate monuments were not erected as “memorials” directly after the Civil War, but instead to terrorize Black people seeking to exist in public places and cast their rightful votes in the Jim Crow era.
This tragic weekend was the third time white supremacists rallied around the Robert E. Lee statue in Charlottesville, Virginia. White nationalist Richard Spencer led a torch-lit rally in May and last month the Ku Klux Klan came there from North Carolina. Confederate monuments attract vile, violent white nationalists and continue to be a danger to our communities.
We must put in the work to dismantle white supremacy, starting with tearing down the statuesthat worship Confederate generals and monuments that give credence to Confederate “causes”.
It’s not enough to relocate or remove Confederate monuments. They must be torn down, toppled, broken, shattered. They are contemptible symbols of white supremacy, racism, and murder. We cannot allow them to shelter racists any longer.
Sign if you agree we must tear Confederate statues down. They are monuments to white supremacy and they must go. Now.
