We have known for quite some time that the National Rifle Association has been involved in extremely shady, and some illegal, practices.

A Senate investigation revealed that the NRA worked with Russians to influence American elections. Top officials at the NRA used the organization’s financial resources — largely collected by member dues — to curry political favor for two Russians, Aleksander Torshin and Maria Butina, who was convicted last year of conspiring to act as a foreign agent.

Last year, the NRA came under fire for abusing their tax exempt c3 status with hundreds of millions of dollars that had allegedly been siphoned off to top executives and vendors. Despite the information that revealed the NRA may have abused its tax-exempt status, the IRS never investigated.

And now, because of these sordid dealings, the attorney general of New York is taking action to dissolve the NRA following an 18-month investigation that found evidence the powerful gun rights group is "fraught with fraud and abuse”.

The NRA is clearly not just a “fan club” for supporters of the Second Amendment. They act as one of the most powerful lobbying groups in our country, buying off every politician they can. The U.S. saw the highest number of mass killings on record in 2019. Yet, the NRA continues to financially support lawmakers and candidates who block gun reforms.

The NRA’s sordid dealings have violated the federal laws governing charitable organizations and they have directly interfered with our democratic election process.

It is time we stop allowing this organization to continue breaking the law.
