In a ruling that is part of the same agenda being used to control and criminalize pregnant people, the state Supreme Court of Alabama just ruled that frozen microscopic embryos, fertilized in test tubes are living, breathing human beings, and the destruction of them could be considered the wrongful death of a minor.

Since then, fertility clinics in Alabama have stopped IVF treatments out of fear of being sued for the wrongful death of any unused, discarded or destroyed embryos. Couples have been prevented from continuing their efforts to have kids.

The Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice’s Bible-heavy opinion cited scripture and theology in the decision, ignoring the separation of church and state. He wrote that the state recognizes “unborn human life” and that destroying it, including frozen embryos, is an affront to God.

In a state that already bans abortion, even in the case of rape or incest, this was the next step in granting the state the right to do whatever it wants to girls and women. And Republicans in Congress are all in. They have repeatedly voted against reproductive freedom and for the Life at Conception Act, which would recognize fertilized eggs as “extrauterine children, "practically ending the practice of IVF.
