Across this country almost every day, families whose loved ones have been killed, injured, or traumatized at the hands of law enforcement are denied the ability to seek accountability by a legal doctrine called 'qualified immunity' that, in many cases, shields law enforcement officers from being sued for abuse of power or misconduct.

In other occupations, there are standards of conduct that must be followed, and consequences for violating those standards of conduct -- doctors are able to be sued for malpractice, lawyers can be sued for negligence -- almost every occupation allows for accountability in the courts.

Police officers should not be treated any differently.

Qualified immunity allows police officers to abuse their power without fear of accountability. It impedes justice and undermines the rights of every person in this country.

There can be no justice without accountability, and there can be no accountability with qualified immunity.
