The right to collectively bargain is the backbone of the American dream. But right now workers who want to unionize face an uphill battle.
Corporate intimidation has led to lower wages, increased inequality, unfair workplaces, and less respect on the job. Rates of retaliation, coercion, threats and intimidation remain extremely high. An analysis by AFL-CIO reported that the level of opposition workers face has intensified. A majority of employers used captive audience or one-on-one meetings to harass workers. Nearly 50% of employers interrogated workers about union activity as well as threatened workers with plant closings, outsourcing or contracting out of their work.
Corporations and politicians have rigged the system against working people by chipping away at our right and ability to join unions through intimidation and fear tactics. We must rein in massive corporations like Amazon, while empowering workers to organize and advocate for better wages, benefits, and working conditions.
If wages had kept up with productivity, the minimum would be $24 an hour today, and by 2025 it would be almost $30. Meanwhile the costs of basic necessities like rent, healthcare, food, and more have skyrocketed. American workers face inflation and rising costs while wages remain stagnant.
The historic, pro-union Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act would restore fairness to the economy by strengthening federal laws that protect the right for workers to organize and collectively bargain for higher wages and better benefits.
We must break corporate America's tight hold on Congress by passing pro-union legislation like the PRO Act.
