The Supreme Court gutted the landmark 1965 Voting Rights Act twice. First, they stripped away the provision that protected ballot access in states with a history of voter suppression. Then, Justice Alito issued a majority opinion making it more difficult for Black, brown, and other voters of color to prove discrimination.
That’s just the beginning of the Supreme Court’s attack on the right to vote. Through the use of a “shadow docket,” the court repeatedly overturned lower courts' decisions that made the voting process easier. The docket allows the Court to hand out unsigned orders without justification.
If this conservative Supreme Court has its way, they’ll wipe out voting rights protections for good. We can’t let that happen.
The John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act (H.R.4), recently passed in the House, strengthens the freedom to vote by restoring the provisions the Supreme Court struck down. With preclearance restored, federal oversight can prevent changes to voting laws that disproportionately affect communities of color and stay the flood of Republican voter suppression bills.
H.R.4 counteracts the Court’s bad rulings and weakens the conservative justices' interference in the election process.
Passing H.R.4 is an important step towards creating national voting standards ensuring that our voices are heard equally at the ballot box, no matter who we are or where we live
The House already passed H.R.4, now it must pass the Senate. Sign the petition: Demand that the Senate pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act (H.R.4).
